How Will Medicare For All Be Paid For?
i think we should go back to the question that was asked which is, “why is it that every other major country on earth is providing quality health care to all people and the united states is not?
” we will not have a medicare for all system tomorrow.
this is going to take years.
i have been in congress for a while.
i know it takes years.
we are in the beginning of the process.
we are going to lay out the plan.
i think it is important to know it is not going to be free.
i think it is important to know that in the united states today, we spend $3 trillion on health care with more people uninsured or underinsured than any time in our history.
we pay to the pharmaceutical companies far more than any country on earth.
the pharmaceutical companies are ripping us off with a health system that does not provide quality care to all.
i think it is important to recognize that where this money comes from.
chris: you would tax the hell out of people, right?
bernie: well, we are going to tax the wealthy.
chris: for health care?
chris: the working class.
bernie: the working class and middle class are making it harder to provide for their families. they are having a difficult time going to a doctor. they are having a difficult time paying the bills. they are having a difficult time sending their kids to college. many of them are wondering whether they can send their kids to college at all.
chris: bernie, i want to go beyond that because you used to say single-payer before. you are not calling for single-payer now. you are calling for a hybrid plan which is going to be in the next few years, the end result, which is a single-payer plan. can you be precise with us, should we raise taxes on the middle-class to pay for health care?
bernie: what health care is going to do is end the disgrace of as we speak, the american people having to choose between food and medicine. having to send their kids to college and wonder whether they can send them to college. millions of people literally struggling with the kind of health care that they have. this is a disgrace. health care is not a privilege, it is a right. medicare for all, which is what i am fighting for and is what i will achieve will provide quality health care to all people. i am not going to tell you that in the first year, everybody, we are going to eliminate private health insurance. all i can tell you is the way to do it is to have a plan that works, that is the only way you get to a single payer system.
chris: bernie, you have been a supporter of the iran deal. president trump is not. what is your message to the president about the iran deal and what do you believe about iran?
bernie: chris, i know you are trying to ask a very important question. i hope you will allow me a few moments to answer it.
bernie: in terms of the iran deal, i think the iran deal is one of the important accomplishments of president obama's administration. i think it is a diplomatic accomplishment. we have an agreement that iran will not get a nuclear weapon. i think it is unfortunate that president trump has said he is going to withdraw from the iran. i hope he does not do that. i think it is important to take a deep breath and realize that we are going to be living with the legacy of that agreement for many years to come. i think we have to give it a chance.
chris: you don't think the iran deal was a mistake?
bernie: i think there are some really good things in that agreement.
chris: you think it is a good deal?
bernie: i think it is a good deal. i think it is a good deal to prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon.
chris: but a good deal is a good deal?
bernie: i am trying to answer your question.
chris: do you think it was a good deal?
bernie: i think it was a good deal. chris, i have known you for a long time. i know you are a fair guy. i am trying to answer your question.
chris: you are not calling it a mistake, though. you don't think it was a mistake?
bernie: i think that this is an important question, chris. i am trying to answer your question.
chris: you are not.
chris: you are trying to filibuster.
chris: bernie, please answer the question.
bernie: in all due respect, i am trying to answer your question.
chris: i don't want you to filibuster.
bernie: i am not trying to filibuster.
chris: you are.
chris: bernie, you are filibustering.
bernie: i am trying to answer your question. i am not interested in playing games. i am not interested in playing games.
bernie: i am not interested in playing games.
